Communal Kitchens investigates new models of Social Housing through the collective role of the kitchen, considering it as a central space in domestic life and in broader social and gender dynamics. The project explores how shared kitchens can become the organizing element for different forms of living together and collective care.

Located on Fundão Island, Rio de Janeiro, the proposal adapts an existing building originally designed for academic use into residential housing. The main design challenge was the depth of the floor plan, addressed through strategies that promote cross ventilation and spatial reorganization.

The project is organized around three housing typologies, defined by length of stay:

Short-term (10 days): compact, highly efficient units with minimal private infrastructure and shared facilities.

Medium-term (10 months): small apartments organized around communal kitchens that encourage daily interaction and shared use.

Long-term (10 years): larger duplex units with kitchens integrated into collective circulation spaces, supporting long-term community living.

Modular construction systems, including drywall partitions and built-in furniture integrated with the structural columns, were used to organize the units and optimize the available space. The distribution of the housing typologies follows the structural logic of the existing building.
